Rhythm of Love

You looked down at the paper in front of you, your hands at the side of your head and your eyes wary. What even is this?!

The answer is the pileup of homework from your first day at World Academy. That's right--calculus, algebra, and history sheets all piled up into a vomit-worthy pack of paper.

You were going to be up all night. How did your teachers expect you to finish all of this in a night and be turned in the following morning? Taking in a deep breath, you tried to calm your growing anger and stress.

Reluctantly, you picked up the No. 2 pencil to your side and twiddled with it, going through the first sheets of math. "You have two block of clay in cube form and the edges are 10 cm. How many spheres with a radius of 5 cm can you make with that amount of clay?" you read aloud, your right brow raising.

"Jesus Christ.." you muttered, planting your forehead on the desk. You wasted three more hours glancing at more impossible questions, your attempts of trying to solve them failing every time.

Strands of your patience started to fly out of the window. You checked the clock. 9:24 P.M., and you haven't even eaten dinner.

The stress was starting to build up, and you could feel a pit growing in the bottom of your stomach and a lump forming in your throat.

You tightened your grip on the pencil, almost breaking it. You snarled, biting back tears. Your mind eventually drifted to your Lithuanian friend, wondering if he was still awake at this hour.

Toris had been your best friend since the two of you met in seventh grade. You defended his shy, timid style when a bully attempted to tease Toris about it. The two of you were close instantaneously.

That was five years ago. Now the both of you were eighteen, and schooling at World Academy. You decided to take your chances, slamming the pencil down and marching out of the door.

"Where are you going?" your roommate, Maddy, asked you in a quiet voice. You jumped. You forgot she was even there, and wondered when she did get there. The Canadian girl was propped on her elbows on her bed, reading a magazine.

You twisted your hand on the doorknob, stepping into the hall. "I need to vent.." you shouted over your shoulder, hoping Maddy heard you.

Bursting out of the main doors of the girls' dormitories building, you sprinted towards the boys' building on the other side of campus. You hastily swiped a tear away from your cheek. This wasn't the time!

Once you reached the building, you pushed the door open and ran down the corridors, abruptly stopping at Toris' room. The back of your hand hit the door two times, a pause, then knocked using your knuckles.

That was yours and Toris' secret knock. You didn't know if he still remembered it. The two of you hadn't used it since middle school. Hoping he did, you waited for him to answer the door.

Not ten seconds later, a worried looking Toris slid the door open. His brown locks were dishelved, and he wore a World Academy sweater.

"(y/n)? What's wrong?" he asked with a concerned tone. Your bottom lip trembled, and tears threatened to spill. "Oh, (y/n)." Toris started, his face softening.

You charged into him, wrapping your arms around his waist and sobbing into his sweater clad chest. "Hey, shh, don't cry." he said, rubbing circles into your back, shutting the door.

You trembled, still crying. You tilted your head up to see his comforting, cool green eyes. He swept a (h/c) strand from your face. "What's wrong?"

"GASP, (Y/N)!" a familiar voice said. Your head snapped to the direction of the voice, and you saw Feliks with a shocked expression.

You smiled a little, and rested your head against Toris' chest. "Oh, hey, Feliks." you said. Feliks spun in a swivel chair once before rising.

"Do tell us the matter." Feliks said, flipping his shoulder length blond locks. You scowled, and fell back into the sofa. "Schoolwork."

Feliks and Toris frowned. "Oh-M-Jee, you got that right, girl." sighed Feliks, sinking back into the swivel chair. "They handed me all of this math nonsense they didn't even teach!" you say, finally letting our your worries.

Toris sat down next to you, and scooped up your hand and squeezed it. You faced him, and he flashed you a warm smile that melted you.

You grinned back, squeezing his hand. You lost yourself in his green eyes, not realizing that roughly seven seconds passed. "UGHHH!" Feliks groaned in frustration from the chair, spinning furiously.

"What's wrong, Feliks?" you asked, breaking your contact with Toris. "JUST CONFESS YOUR LOVE ALREADY!" he said, burying his face in his hands and dramatically draping his self over the chair.

You released Toris' hand and faced the other way, not wanting him to see the massive blush on your face. It was true--you did have a soft spot for your best friend. But you thought that was all he wanted to be:best friends.

Toris shot a 'shut-up-or-i-will-kill-you-in-your-sleep' glare at Feliks, signaling him to stop talking. But the Polish young man, oblivious of the look Toris was giving him, trucked on.

"I-I don't know what you're talking about," you denied. Feliks scoffed. "Boo, terrible liar. It's so obvious." You couldn't take it anymore. Was it really that clear? Toris would have to be stupid not to see it.

Rising from your seat, you walked towards the door, more than ready to leave. A hand seized your wrist and stopped you. "Wait. Hear me out." Toris pleaded.

His forest green eyes melted the white hot anger brewing inside, and you sighed, loosening yourself from his grip. "What?" you asked bitterly.

Toris inhaled, and said it so fast you almost couldn't catch it. "Feliksisrightandireallydolikeyoubutimreallyscaredyoumightnotlikemeback."

You stared wide-eyed at the person you couldn't have survived middle school or high school without. "Really?" you asked softly. Toris shook his head, sighing. "Truly."

Resting a hand on his cheek, you said, "There's nothing to be afraid of. I really like you too." Toris' face brightened. "You're lying," he said in disbelief, grinning.

You laughed and punched his shoulder. "Shut up, Toris." Feliks clapped his hands together and exclaimed, "FINALLY!" Rolling your eyes at your silly friend, you shyly pecked Toris on the cheek.

An enormous blush spread through his features as he turned away. You laughed at how adorably shy he was being. You could hear a familiar song being strung by a ukulele in the background.

It was Feliks, strumming a red and white ukulele. "I know this song!" you said, the notes clicking. Toris chuckled and offered a hand to you. "Remember the words, I hope?" he asked.

"Positive." you replied, smiling and taking his hand. He rested his hands lightly on your waist and you snaked your arms around his neck as you swayed to the beat.

"We may only have tonight," Toris sang. "But 'till the morning sun your mine, all mine." you sung, grinning.

"Play the music low, and sway to the rhythm of love." Toris sung, resting his chin on your head. Feliks strummed the ukulele more upbeat, and Toris twirled you playfully as you laughed with joy.

"My heart beats like a drum, a guitar string to the strum, a beautiful song to be sung!" you sang, louder this time. "She's got (e/c) eyes deep like the sea-" Toris began.

"That roll back when she's laughing at me," Feliks deadpanned, rolling his eyes as he referred to your affectionate teasing towards him. You grinned as you skipped to him, pinching his cheek and making him laugh.

You fell back into Toris' arms, and you continued to dance, your steps in sync. "She rises up, like the tide. The moment her lips meet mine." Toris sang, kissing you on the lips briefly.

The two of you sang the chorus together as you and Toris' feet clacked the hardwood floors, following the rhythm.

"We may only have tonight,
But till the morning sun, you're mine.
All mine.
Play the music low,
And sway to the rhythm of love."

Toris dipped you, his hand firmly supported your back while you clung to your neck and yelped form the unexpected move. Toris chuckled as he pulled you up, and you rested your head against his chest while he sung the next verse.

"When the moon is low," he sung. You joined him. "We can dance in slow motion." You smiled up at him, and he grinned back at you.

He wiped the remaining tears on your chin from your stress while singing, "And all your tears will subside. And all your tears-" He broke to blow into your face playfully. "will dry."

Now, whenever you felt down, or stressed, you had your new boyfriend to comfort you and your other best friend strum the ukulele once again so the two of you could sway to the rhythm of love.
